Whenever people assume that I'm this "crazy strict nutrition nut" I laugh. Where I do consider myself to be a wellness warrior and advocate for hundreds of clients, I certainly was not always this way. I was a health "enthusiast" but looking healthy and being healthy are too entirely different things.
I began my career as an Assistant Director, Script Supervisor and Producer in Television and Film in NYC. I was always on the go whether on a set, commuting to that set, or running to and from events and errands. I found I "didn't have time to eat right," sleep for eight hours a night (are you kidding me?!?) or get in my workouts-- and sure paid the price! Plus the stress of this lifestyle, as fabulous as the production was, the day to day was a grind. I suffered from chronic pain for years until I found a several alternative practitioners who helped me to experience cleaner eating = less pain! WOW! It made a WORLD of difference! Could something so simple work? The short answer is yes.
My story begins just after graduating Ithaca College with my Television Production and Direction Degree and a Minor in Psychology. I had always been an active teenager and always played sports, went running, or to the gym. However, I took advantage of (and took for granted) my youthful metabolism. While away at school and making "big girl decisions"I ate pizza, Lucky Charms and drank beer like it was all going out of style. As a busy college student, I found I had less time for exercise. When I did engage in activity, I typically got injured. My injuries took longer and longer to heal and eventually I was in a constant state of pain. Top orthopedic surgeons were stumped because the location of my worst pain was not consistent with the injury locations.
By my senior year of college I was maturing (hallelujah!), already eating better and exercising more regularly. Just two years after graduation, my world was rocked when my 50 year old father died suddenly of heart disease that we never knew he had. We were floored to learn he had blocked arteries -- his primary care physician certainly didn't know, my father was never tested because he looked so healthy and fit and worked out daily. Short-sighted and too little too late.
Heart disease is the #1 killer of women and men and and like so many before him, my Dad's first symptom of heart disease, was death. Everything I thought I knew about health and fitness went out the window. My Father did some kind of exercise everyday (running, tennis, weight-lifting, swimming,) was a non-smoker, non-drinker, not overweight, lowered his cholesterol and ate healthfully. Or so we thought. How did he get severe heart disease?!?
This devastation lead me to start asking questions, and dedicating my life to academic research into nutrition and optimal performance. At the time of my Father's death, I had just started acupuncture treatment for my chronic pain. Still not making the mind-food-body connection, I proceeded to suffer from chronic pain for most of my 20s. But acupuncture and these coaches and practitioners opened my eyes to a whole new world. I started paying attention to messages my body was sending me for the first time. Heart disease and pain are not typically fluke instances, but rather warning signs that changes need to be made pronto! I now had an unsettling family history that needed to be heeded, respected and avoided. I was sad, scared, and most of all: sick and tired of feeling sick and tired! Thankfully, this I could do something about!
With the help of my alternative practitioners, I quickly learned the importance of maximum nutrition, and successfully healed my chronic pain, migraines and sugar addiction! As if that wasn't enough, I experienced the added benefit of losing seven pounds that I've kept off for over seven years!
